This island has several historical firsts, such as the world’s first Neolithic depiction of a vessel or the oldest public theatre in Europe. A remnant of Greek colonization, the island’s Stari Grad Plain retained the original agrarian infrastructure and Greek division of the lots that remained untouched to this day, for which reason it was placed on the list of World Heritage Sites.

 

Hvar is also a proud home of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, most notably of the “Following the Cross” procession and the amazing Hvar lace. Made from thin white threads that are obtained from the core of fresh aloe leaves, Hvar lace is woven by Benedictine nuns into various unique patterns, the elegant and recognizable symbols of Hvar.
